USITT 2018 was filled with reunions, innovation, new technology, and many firsts for the Conference.
As we look forward to USITT19 in Louisville, Kentucky, we’re taking a moment to reflect on how things panned out in Fort Lauderdale.
USITT 2018 brought together 5,429 attendees, 315 exhibitors, and plenty of technology to the Broward County Convention Center March 14-17.
Keynote speaker Wendall K. Harrington opened the Conference with her take on modern projection design, the relationship between designer and audience, and keeping it real.
“Our fundamental relationship is with the audience,” Harrington said. “Try, listen, feel what they are feeling. They don’t know what you know.”
Daniel Lerner, author of U Thrive: How to Succeed in College (and Life) and promoter of happiness and harmonious passion, spoke at the Early Career Honor Awards advocating hope for our early career members.
“Can you be successful without being happy? Absolutely,” Lerner said. “But you have a choice to be happy.”
The outdoor stages were a first for USITT and served many purposes throughout the week. Opening night and the new products showcase, loudspeaker demos, outdoor safety sessions, and the Tech Olympics all made use of the outdoor stages.
Stages also made an appearance on the Expo floor. The Innovation Stage and Costume Stage were heavily used for sessions, demonstrations, and fashion shows!
Also new this year, the “Dark Zone” on the Expo floor highlighted many of our exhibiting lighting companies. The area allowed them to show off their best and brightest products in an environment never before seen at USITT.
Yet another first for USITT, poster sessions were displayed digitally. Forget poster board, a thumb drive was all that was needed. This allowed for easier set up and a more innovative presentation. Many of USITT’s session and event signs got a digital makeover as well, making room and information changes more efficient while also appearing brighter and animated.
That’s a wrap on USITT 2018 and a “let’s get started” on USITT19. Thank you for making this event thrive.
See you all in Louisville!
